 Isabella Stravoiu

Hi I’m Isabella, a senior at Governor Livingston High School. I have a passion for helping others, I am observant and a compassionate leader. As a first generation US citizen, I have learned a strong work ethic from my parents.

THE HIGHLANDER // Managing Editor

Using my position as Managing Editor of my high school newspaper, The Highlander, I introduced a new platform (Trello) to our staff to help maintain an organized and structured process of drafting, editing, and publishing, as well as preparing for new events. Being a part of the newspaper motivated me to explore my creative writing skills while also teaching me about how to collaborate (with people?) and take part of a business-type organization.

TEACHING CODING // Scratch

Through teaching Elementary School students Scratch, I aimed to expand the understanding the younger students had of computer science to a greater level. While teaching the children, I, myself, learned patience and consideration. Being a teacher, if only for one summer, opened a new perspective of how to delegate while also encouraging students to stay engaged. This experience gave me a fresh approach to coding, making computer science seem not only technical and mathematical, but also an outlet to express creativity and have fun!

MODEL UN // President

As president of the Model UN Club, I strived to inspire my peers to join Model UN. Utilizing a website I created about the Model UN Club at GL, I was able to educate people about the importance of Model UN by summarizing the impactful topics, such as global warming and the harmful effects of fast fashion, that are discussed with students from around the world. By showcasing the thrilling and educational experience that is provided through Model UN, I was able to recruit more members into the community.

VOLUNTEERING

Through Interact I realized how important giving back to the community can be. This year I organized the trip to the food bank where we sorted pasta that would be delivered to families across New Jersey. This was one of my favorite events because it gave me a new perspective because while I was impacted by the Pandemic, other families were going through much worse.

Here’s an article from our school newspaper about our volunteer work in the community!

FLYING PLANES

LEGO LEAGUE COMPETITIONS

In middle school, my family and I competed in the First Lego League Challenge. When we first started working, my siblings and I found it difficult to work with each other. We would constantly argue about which approach to take when completing the challenges. I decided that the most effective way to make progress in this competition was for each of us to create a slideshow outlining our ideas for the project in a format similar to a business pitch (or sales pitch). Everyone quickly became passionate about creating the most impressive presentation that would be able to convince everyone on the team to go with their idea (maybe change this). This strategy allowed for effective communication within our team. Afterwards, we were able to solve many of our disagreements this way.

Ever since I could remember my dad and I would drive out to a field and launch planes into the air. While this served as a bonding time, it also allowed me to expand my understanding of the mechanics behind the planes. My favorite memory was when I was able to finally land the plane without crashing. It seems easy in theory, however I quickly learned through the virtual simulations that there is much more that goes into it. This year my dad and I took on the challenge of putting a camera on the plane to make it seem like we were flying as well. Instead of purchasing the kit, we decided to make it a DIY project. Through this project I learned how to program and construct the camera with the plane and

PLAYING PIANO

I started playing classical piano when I was 10 years old. I participated in annual music competitions and performed at Carnegie Hall for placing first place.
